Dr. Caroline Freiermuth, associate professor in the UC Department of Emergency Medicine, is collaborating with Ohio State University’s Dr. Yost on the most comprehensive look into how our genetic makeup might affect addiction. What if there was a genetic test that could determine whether certain people were more likely to develop opioid use disorder? UC is assisting in what Yost says is an unprecedented study to identify the genetic factors that may make an individual more prone to developing an opioid addiction, information that could guide physicians when they prescribe medication for pain management.
